The Plaza is a statement banquette for designers who want the seating to be the feature of the room. The back is made of six semicircular upholstered lobes, each about 12 in (30 cm) wide, joined into a continuous scalloped top. A slim brass trim, 1.25 in (3 cm) wide, is bent to follow every curve without a break.
That trim is the detail that is hard to produce: bending metal accurately to repeated tight radii and fitting it to upholstery takes skill and patience. It is also what makes the piece look finished rather than handmade.
Construction. Rigid seat box, back frame with individually shaped lobes, firm back foam to hold the curves, high-resilience seat foam, recessed plinth.
Where it works. Cocktail bars, hotel restaurants, brunch rooms and any space that wants a photogenic wall.
Options. Number and width of lobes, back height, upholstery (velvet is popular), trim finish or no trim.
